Efficient and safe order picking in distribution centres

Multitube specialises in lean manufacturing hardware and offers innovative solutions for logistical processes. When developing a new order picking trolley for a distribution centre, the focus was on optimising ergonomics and safety. The high flexibility and efficiency requirements of the processes called for an advanced solution – and this was found in the ErgoMove electric drive systems from Blickle.

In modern distribution centres, order picking trolleys have to withstand high loads every day. Multitube developed a new transport trolley that can move loads of up to 500 kilograms. The challenge was to reduce the physical strain on employees while increasing safety and efficiency. Particular challenges arose from the transport between the racks, the use on raised platforms – the so-called mezzanine levels – and the numerous start-stop operations that the system has to perform.

By using the ErgoMove 500, Multitube benefits from an ergonomically optimised, safe and efficient order picking solution that consistently improves the logistical working environment. The trolley is fitted with electrically powered castors from the ErgoMove 500 series, which, in combination with the rotary control, enable controlled acceleration, movement and braking. Thanks to individual parameterisation, speed and driving modes can be flexibly adjusted, while programmable shortcuts allow for quick changes between different operating modes. This results in optimised control and a precise workflow. The ErgoMove 500 offers further essential safety features, including an emergency stop mechanism that automatically stops the trolley as soon as the handle is released, thus significantly reducing the risk of accidents. In addition, electrostatically dissipative swivel castors and a truck lock help to protect employees from injury. Guide rollers on the sides ensure precise travelling between the shelves. The flexibility of the system is maximised by the simple battery replacement, so that the trolley is always ready for use. In addition, the option of transporting it with a forklift truck makes it easy to use at different levels, thus contributing to an even more efficient logistics solution.
